Balance Support Group

Balance

Balance is a peer support group for those living with bipolar disorder.

When
1st, 3rd, 5th Tuesday of the month, 6pm - 8pm
Free | koha welcome

Location
Balance meets at 292 Taranaki Street, Wellington City (next to Crossfit gym).

Women, men, and all genders are welcome.
You do not need to contact us in advance, simply turn up.

In peer support we share from our own lives about our experiences living with what are commonly considered "mood disorders". We share the negatives and the positives of living with an interesting mind. Everyone attending Balance lives with a "mental health" challenge and our group is facilitated by someone who lives with bipolar disorder. Members' family or friends do not attend, though you may bring a support person to your first meeting. You do not have to speak in the group, you may simply listen.

Usually we have a discussion topic, which is chosen by the group.
Discussion topics include: Stigma, The Mental Health System, Legal Stuff, Dealing With Depression, Advance Directives, Medication, Dealing with "Mania", Exercise, Sleep, Family and Friends, Sexism, Work/Employment, Our "cycles", Models of "mental illness", Types of Bipolar, GPs and Psychiatrists, Disability Allowance/Work and Income, and more.

We have three main rules
1. Confidentiality
We don't talk about people outside of the group.

2. Be kind
We act respectfully and kindly in the group.

3. No advice
We are not counsellors, we share from our own experience but we do not give advice to others.

Balance has been running in Wellington for more than 15 years, and previously met in the Johnsonville Community centre. Our meetings are free, although we appreciate koha to cover tea and coffee.

Balance is grateful for the support of Trauma Recovery Aotearoa.

Note there are stairs. Please contact us in advance if you need access via the lift.
