Volunteer Team

Rachel Maat (She/Her) Volunteer

Kia ora,

My name is Rachel Maat, and I have been a dedicated volunteer with Men and Trauma NZ since early 2024. My passion for the mental health sphere drives my commitment to supporting the organisation's initiatives and contributing to its growth.

I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degrees in a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a Bachelor of Communications, where I am developing a strong foundation in mental health advocacy and psychological research. While completing my undergraduate, I actively apply my skills to support the development of Men and Trauma NZ, working to raise awareness and facilitate meaningful conversations around mental health.

Kia ora,
I have been volunteering with Men and Trauma NZ since 2024, where I perform a wide range of roles. I joined because I have a strong passion for mental health and trauma recovery, and wanted to learn more about the challenges facing ordinary New Zealanders. Outside of my volunteer work, I am a Master’s student at Victoria University of Wellington currently writing a thesis on the history of distress and distress disorders in ancient communities. As a student of the humanities, my passions for mental health lie especially in the intersection of science and culture, and how we can use the arts to promote and facilitate healthier connections between and among our communities.

Kia ora,

I'm Leisha. Having experienced trauma myself and completed a Diploma in Counselling as a taiohi, I have been around the social services for the past decade both supporting others and being supported. Two highlights of my professional journey are my time at Vibe (2017-2018) and Youthline Wellington (2016-2020). After taking a break from frontline mahi for the last couple of years, I connected with Richard (Managing Director) in March 2025 and am now volunteering here as Operations Lead while also joining our Board. I love the vast array of background tasks I get to do as part of these roles, and from time to time you'll find me in the peer support space too.

My hope is that as we tautoko survivors and their whānau to stand in their mana and find whakaora, the healing will flow out to their communities and the next generation.
