What causes trauma?

Mental or Psychological Trauma can be caused by many different events.

The 10 ACEs (Adverse Childhood Events) measured in the research conducted by the Center for Disease Control (USA) are:
  • Physical abuse
  • Child Abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Physical neglect
  • Emotional neglect
  • A family member who is depressed or diagnosed with other mental illness
  • A family member who is addicted to alcohol or another substance
  • A family member who is in prison
  • Witnessing a mother being abused
  • Losing a parent to separation, divorce or death

Life threatening events
Sexual Assault
Torture
War injury
Physical assault
Near death experiences
Illness
Witnessing another suffering one of these

Vicarious Trauma
Seeing another person experiencing any of those
Working with Traumatised clients
Family members of victims of trauma


C-PTSD*
Long term (chronic) events such as: childhood neglect, bullying, repeated threats of violence, narcissistic abuse,

Long periods in bad conditions, such as: war zone, abuse in an institution, time as a refugee,
